****************************************************** VOLUME II – The Triduum
The Triduum is one extensive love story portrayed in three parts. It is God’s incomprehensible and merciful gift of salvation to us, undeserving though we are, through Jesus. I am posing a few questions for reflection here that I hope will be beneficial as these three days unfold.
Holy Thursday
In the Gospel account of Jesus washing the feet of the apostles, Jesus says, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” Jesus most assuredly gave us a model of service to follow. In addition, by instituting the Eucharist, Jesus gave us the gift of combining the Divine with our humanity so that we might be able put others before ourselves as Jesus did for us. What has Jesus done in our lives that attest to Divine prompting?
Good Friday
In the long Gospel reading according to John, there are many instances of participants who put themselves and their ideas first, the opposite of what Jeus did and asks us to do. Although this particular Gospel account does not include Judas receiving the 30 pieces of silver, perhaps Judas at first must have thought either something beneficial would come out of having the money for the group or Jesus would show divine power, no? Jesus stuck to the will of the Father, however, and said, “let these men go”. How often do we think our ideas are better than Jesus’s or the plan that seems to be part of our lives?
Easter Vigil
The seven readings from the Old Testament provide the background of God’s everlasting love and care for us throughout the ages. The Epistle to the Romans reminds us that we now have new life through our baptism into Jesus’s death and Resurrection. The Gospel according to Matthew provides us with Jesus’s own instructions for Mary Magdalen and the other Mary not to be afraid, but to tell the disciples about the Resurrection and their meeting place. Where is it in our lives that we can continue to meet the Resurrected Jesus to spread the Good News in our day and time, in the midst of all the strife and unbelief that surround us? Easter Sunday
The Epistle and Gospel readings can vary depending on the time of day of the Easter Sunday service. The first reading, however, from the Acts of the Apostles, is the same: Peter sharing the Good News that God raised Jesus from the dead and that witnesses can substantiate that they ate and drank with Jesus afterwards. Yes, the same Peter who denied Jesus three times! How forceful and in what circumstances do we share the Good News in our everyday lives?
+ Let us pray whether you can just read the readings and reflect on them alone or with your community or are blessed to participate in an in-person service or a virtual one that they will bear good fruit for the Kingdom.
Blessings, Dr. Lanie LeBlanc OP Southern Dominican Laity
